- Description
"Ub" 17 (Brooks), a Ub steam locomotive, type 4-6-0, built by American Locomotive Co., Brooks Works, in 1901. Photograph taken by an unidentified photographer, probably at the Brooks Works in America, before the locomotive was delivered to New Zealand. The number 1 is on the driver's door, with "New Zealand Government Rys" on the tender. This lettering appears to have been done in America, as the New Zealand Railways gave it the class and number "Ub" 17. This film negative is a copy of the image in Godber's Album, Vol 109, p 42 (PA1-q-102), which includes the inscriptions in album. Dated from another copy of this image in Godber's Album Vol 108, p 49 (PA1-q-101).

This engine was built by American Locomotive Co., Brooks Works (maker's no 3925/01), went into service on 4 December 1901, and was written off on the 14 October 1933.
