Reconstruction of the death of Marion du Fresne. Shows part of a pa, with a store-house (pataka), whare and fence. A group of implements and European objects is in the foreground. Marion du Fresne is surrounded by a number of Maori, with children in the background. A Maori woman is walking off to the left with another French sailor.

Provenance: Exhibited at the Paris Salon, 1848, passed to the artist's friend Antoine-Edouard Foley, then by inheritance to his son before being bought in Paris by Rex Nan Kivell and smuggled back to Britain, rolled inside Nan Kivell's trouser leg, at the outbreak of the 2nd World War. Part of Rex Nan Kivell collection, National Library of Australia, between 1959 and 1967, when it was given by the Australian Government to the New Zealand Government, during the visit to New Zealand of the Australian Prime Minister
