The work appears to be signed C. P. lower right. The artist is likely to be Charles Johnson Payne, rather than E. Payne.
Inscriptions: Verso - Ypres, ruins of Cloth Hall & Cathedral, 1920, in ink; also in pencil, in another hand 'By E. Payne'; On separate label (removed from backing board and retained with work) Cloth Hall, Ypres, 1919. Payne.
