Ellen Spencer and her daughters with children of the mission school at Te Wairoa, photographed in 1859 by Bruno Hamel during the visit of the Government Scientific Exploring Expedition conducted by Dr Ferdinand Hochstetter.

The same image occurs in an album held by the Auckland Institute and Museum, with the title "Maori School, Tarawera". A photocopy of this album is held at PAColl-1637.
