Half-length three-quarters frontal portrait of artist J. A. Gilfillan wearing a suit and white shirt front with a bow tie. He has side whiskers but no beard or moustache
Traditional identification of subject as Gilfillan himself lacks documentary support. Conjectural dating from subject's apparent age; deposit slip 1977, reads 1845 (see TL 3/3/3/, 19/5/77, 22/1/80, 1/2/80 and 13/4/83; also letters of J T Stewart, 1885 held at MS acc 83-118)
Inscriptions: Signed on backing, now removed but retained

Physical Description: Oil 652 x 635 mm
Provenance: Previously owned by a private owner in Melbourne, purchased in 1977 from Karl F. Sim, Main Road, Foxton, who purchased it from Miss Rice, Long Acre Road, Wanganui. In 1885, the painting was owned by Mrs F. Stewart, care of John Tiffin Stewart, Aramoho, Wanganui (attested to in a letter written by J. T. Stewart, 28 October 1885). Mrs Stewart had received it from her brother, Philip Carkeek, a civil engineer, whose address was c/o H. J. Harrison, Warrengate, Wanganui.
