Miniature head and shoulders portrait
There is also an earlier and smaller version of this, location unknown, also attributed to B. Bennet Alder. (Information from the Library's Curios shelf-list). A visiting expert on hand-colouring of photographs (2004) considered the Library's version to be a carefully hand-coloured sepia photograph. B. Bennet Alder is therefore likely to be only a colourist, not the artist.
Exhibited in 'A Meeting of Cultures: France and New Zealand' exhibition of early French views of New Zealand and of Katherine Mansfield manuscripts, translations into French and curios, held at Alexander Turnbull Library, 2 to 30 March 1999.
Exhibited in 'Treasures in Trust' exhibition to celebrate 75th anniversary of the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1995.

Provenance: Commissioned in 1932 by Katherine Mansfield's sister, Vera Mackintosh Bell, in Canada, as a hand-painted copy by English artist B. Bennet Alder of a 1913 photograph, for Katherine Mansfield's father, Harold Beauchamp.
