- Description
Letters from Jemima Powell (nee Neate) to her sister, Mary, who presumably passed them on to her other sister, Christina Chapman. Written from Bath, the letters give a lively and gossipy account of life in that town. Many envelopes are annotated with `Free John Wilkes'. This statement was the practice of having your letter franked by a politican to get a free rate. "Free John Wilkes" simply means that Wilkes signed (or authorised the signature) so as not to pay postage (information supplied by a family member).
