Description

A full length portrait of Hiko in a fringed flax cloak, seated on the stern of a canoe at the water's edge, a mere in his right hand.

The accompanying text reads: Hiko the son of Te Pehi Kupe (or Tupai Cupa, as he was formerly called when he visited England in 1826). Hiko is the highest chief in Cook's Strait, by descent. But the intrigues of Rauperaha have almost annihilated his influence. He is of mild and affable demeanour, and dignified bearing; but no trust can be placed in his word, he speaks almost always ironically, and tells direct falsehoods without shame. He is sitting on the carved stern of a war canoe.
