Description

Two police snuffing out a buring effigy of a Te Puni Kokiri worker in a bed of Council bedding begonias in the middle of Lambton Quay, Wellington. Photographed by an Evening Post staff photographer on the 3rd of March 1995.

In 1995 the National Goverment proposed a fiscal envelope of $1 billion to settle Maori claims. Maori were opposed to the idea. On the 3rd of March 1995 a group of 80 Maori students demonstrated outside the Department of Maori Development, Te Puni Kokiri, in opposition to the department marketing this proposal.
