Inscribed inside front cover `Basil Kirke Taylor, August 10 1847, from his papa, Wellington'

The journal was started when he was 16 years old. At the age of 19 Basil was sent to England to further his education at his father's college, Queen's, at Cambridge. He travelled to England on the `John Wesley' accompanied by Archdeacon William Williams, departing Nov 1850.
