A view from the road of the first Government House, built in 1842 and destroyed by fire in 1848. Mount Eden is seen behind the house to the right.
Auckland's first Government House was prefabricated in London. It was wooden, and 120 feet in length, 50 in breadth and 24 in height, with a total floor space of 6000 square feet. It arrived aboard the Platina at Port Nicholson on 6 July 1840 and in Auckland on 2 September. It was located on the eastern slope of Princes Street, its gateway at the south-east extremity, where Princes Street is met by the Waterloo Quadrant.
