- Description
Cartoon of New Zealand Prime Minister, Helen Clark, Australian Prime Minister, John Howard and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, leader of the Turkish Justice and Development Party. They are on a beach at Gallipoli. Helen Clark, looking fierce, is dressed in a Maori flax skirt, holding a mere and doing a haka; John Howard, dressed in beach shorts and a pinafore,is grinning and holding a barbecued sausage on a fork in each hand and Erdogan, looking sombre, is dressed in overalls and carrying a shovel on which is a skull and bones. It refers to John Howard's breaking with tradition and deciding not to attend a New Zealand Anzac Day service at Gallipoli. He plans to attend an Anzac Cove beach barbecue with Australian soldiers instead of attending the service at Chunuk Bair, a slope on which about 850 New Zealand soldiers lost their lives in World War I.
