Description

"A" 196 steam locomotive hauling kauri logs across Maori Creek (or Wekatahi Stream), near Piha. Wekatahi Stream was known as Maori Creek by timber millers working in the area. (See "Piha : a history in images" by Sandra Coney, p 52). Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber, between 1915 and 1916.

Steam locomotive "A" 196 was originally built as steam locomotive "A" 62. It was built by Dubs & Co., Glasgow, Scotland, in 1873 (maker's no. 656/73), and went into service in New Zealand in January 1875. Transferred to New Zealand Railways Maintenance Branch in 1906, and was renumbered "A" 196 probably soon after the transfer. Shipped to Whatipu partlay dismantled, before being brought to Piha fro use on the Piha Tramway.
