Description

New Zealand scenes, suggesting visits on board ship, to Wellington, Nelson, Auckland, Napier, Tauranga and New Plymouth at three separate dates - 1879, 1885 (the majority) and 1887. Also drawings of ships, boats and lighthouses.

No drawings are signed. However on the inside back cover, in mirror writing, in pencil, is the name Gustav Dillberg, 6 Hamburgh Plce, Hull. Dillberg, a Swedish author, may have visited New Zealand on board a ship as a young man. The inside back cover may also be interpreted as the inside front cover, since the sketchbook has been used from both the front and the back

For many years this sketchbook had been attributed by the Library to the Hodgkins family, with several images specifically attributed to Isabel Hodgkins. However comparison with other dated watercolours by Isabel Hodgkins from the same dates (1879 to 1887) suggest the style is different. Also the handwriting is different. In addition, there is much concentration in the sketchbook on drawings of boats, ships, lighthouses, buoys, etc, reflecting the interests of a sailor, rather than of a teenage girl or young Victorian woman in her early twenties. Isabel Hodgkins is not known to have made sea voyages around the ports of New Zealand in 1885, 1887 and 1889
