Description

Top to bottom, four buildings badly damaged in Wellington's 1848 earthquake: Fitzherbert's Store, Ordnance Store, Colonial Hospital and Hickson & Co. The illustration to: An account of the earthquakes in New Zealand (Sydney, Printed by D. Wall, 1848)

Pearse has included on page 53 of his album another copy of the lithographs showing the 1848 earthquake damage (E-455-f-053). The copies on page 53 have been hand-coloured and cut into four separate sections, one for each image.

These image are 'drawings from the pencil of Mr Robert Park, of Wellington' according to the Account which they illustrated. The initials E W 1848 appear lower left, below the view of Hickson & Co and are likely to be those of a Sydney lithographer, probably those of Edwin Winstanley, the lithographer for the New South Wales sporting and literary magazine, in which these lithographs first appeared.
