View painted from the beach depicting a two mast ship, probably the schooner 'Eclipse' lying in the surf after a shipwreck. Two men wearing rolled up trousers stand on the beach in the foreground, with a crowd of people, some on horseback, walkling the bay behind. A group of people sitting and standing around salvaged goods is on the right. In the background is a hill sloping up towards several fenced houses, and a stockade in the distance on the right.
The schooner 'Eclipse' was wrecked on 6 June 1865 at New Plymouth, Taranaki. See "Resident Magistrate's Court.", Taranaki Herald, Volume XIII, Issue 671, 10 June 1865, Page 3, https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/TH18650610.2.13 (accessed 31 Otober 2024).
