Description

Looking along Victoria Street, Hamilton, sometime between 1922 and 1925. Rows of commercial buildings line both sides of the street. Shows canvas roofed cars. Photograph taken by Sydney Charles Smith.

The motor cars in the photo carry Hamilton Borough Council plates. The Motor Vehicles Act 1924 changed this and motor registration became a central government responsibility with registration plates being issued the same the country over. The ‘HN’ plates disappeared by the end of 1925.
