Dr Ernest Edward Porritt, his wife Ivy Elizabeth Mckenzie, and their sons Arthur and Charles, in a trap outside their villa at 59 Ingestre Street, Wanganui, circa 1904. Photograph taken by Frank J Denton.
"Born in Picton in 1870 Ernest Porritt trained in medicine in Edinburgh. He settled in Wanganui where he practised as a surgeon. Dr Porritt was active in a number of community organisations and in 1907 became a founder member of the Wanganui Automobile Association, and later its President." (Information taken from caption used in "Darling, I'm home!" display).
Exhibited in 'Darling, I'm Home!' exhibition at the National Library of New Zealand, 1 June - 5 July 1999.
Dr Porritt's son, Arthur, was later to become the first New Zealand born Governor General.
