Description

Bach made from a converted tram at either Tapu or Waikawau on the west coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. Photographed by Paul Thompson in 1985.

Larissa Morgan has sent information relating to this tram. She is pretty sure that it is at Tapu, and was her family's tram/batch. It was owned by her grandfather Thomas (Tubby) Wilson of Rotorua, a noted Maori carver. He was also uncle of Maori Artist, Arnold Wilson, who recieved the AFNZ Icon Award. Tubby Wilson died in 1986 and the family sold the tram. Subsequently it was not well maintained and suffered damage from storms and was ultimatly dismantled. The base was still there in 2005.

In 1951 Mr E J (Ted) Russek had a contract with the Auckland Tram Company to aquire their trams as they came out of service. Ted transported them to the Coromandel on the back of his logging truck. He parked a score at Tapu (where he lived) and bachers bought the the trams outright (at £20 each) with seats for an extra ten shillings. (info from Paul Thompson).
