Description

Eleven drawings of the crew and fellow male passengers aboard the Duke of Portland, en route to New Zealand. One man is sleeping, two are reading. The page is headed up 'The flag that's braved a thousand years, The battle and the breeze'. From top left, the men are: Leslie - sailmaker; 'Bill'; Apprentice to Skipper; 'Duke' Humphries; One of the crew; Mr Adams D. A. C. G.; Merris 2nd Mate just off watch well wet through; Mr Jackson a Russian merchant off for the Canterbury Plains; 'Duke' Humphries taking his siesta; 'Harry' the Irishman - steward reporting an observation to the Skipper below; Hossack - steerage.
