The ship was ferrying soldiers of the first New Zealand Contingent to fight in the South African War (Boer War)
Another oil by Barnes on offer at Dunbar Sloane, 11 Nov 2007, lot A121, shows the Waiwera with an escort of steamers, taking the 2nd New Zealand contingent, January 20th 1900. Purchased by the Library 2008, (G-083).
