Two views of a prehistoric flint knife found on Mount Waiopehu. Photograph taken February 4, 1928 by George Leslie Adkin.
Inscriptions: Album page - above image - Discovery of a Prehistoric Artifact on Mt Waiopehu, Feb 4th, 1928.; Album page - beneath image - 304, 26b. The Waiopehu flint knife - obverse and reverse sides. The flint is of a medium grey colour with darker markings. Size, 3 1/2 [inches] x 2 [inches] x 1/2 [inches]. The 24 quartz and greywacke moa gizzard stones found with it ranged up to 1 3/4 [inches] in length. The theory adopted is that one of the ancient Moa-hunters (of a period antedating the Main Migration) killed a moa at this spot & dropped the flint knife with which he had cut up his quarry.
