Description

Taken by an unknown photographer in the 1880s. Shows a pou tokomanawa, central post figure, seated with crossed legs. Carved by Wero Tārio of Ngāti Tarāwhai. An annotation beneath the photograph reads "Wairoa", which refers to Te Wairoa near Laka Tarawera.

The pou once held the notice board outside Rotomahana Hotel, Te Wairoa village, which was buried by the Tarwera eruption in 1886.

Eric Craig was the last recorded owner, was listed for sale in 1898 in item at library reference ArtEph-1898-C-01.
