A large Maori war canoe moving towards the viewer, the oars forming a fan pattern, with one man standing and marking time. Another similar canoe is in the distance to the right, with hills behind.
Based on a watercolour held in the British Library, 'War canoe, Waikato River' (Add. MS 19954 f 63 (74)). There is also a preliminary sketch for the view in Auckland Museum Library.
