Description

The palisades of a large Maori pa, with several Maori greeting Bellingshausen and his men. Dense bush in the background.

There was no large pa at Ship Cove in 1820, nor did Ship Cove itself become a great whaling port, although Te Awaiti, at the entrance to Tory Channel, some distance away in Queen Charlotte Sound, did become a whaling station.
