Description

Shows the mother of George Speight pandering to his every whim as a toddler. Speight fronted the rebel group in Fiji which ousted the elected government and held the Prime Minister and his cabinet hostage for 57 days. Exhibition caption reads - Failed businessman George Speight took centre stage on TV bulletins and in the press during the 57 day seige when he and his supporters held the prime minister they had deposed and his cabinet captive in Fiji's parliamentary complex.

Exhibited in '30 from 2000' exhibition of 30 cartoons from the New Zealand Cartoon Archive collection displayed in the National Library (auditorium foyer) from 7 July 2001. The cartoons were all published in the year 2000. Final selection of cartoons made by Rt Hon Jonathon Hunt, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Denis Welch, New Zealand Listener journalist, and Margaret Calder, Chief Librarian of the Alexander Turnbull Library.
