Description

Diorama in a glass case representing some of the birds and animals found on Karewa Island off Tauranga, New Zealand. The diorama depicts a mutton bird burrow in a mound. A mutton bird chick can be seen in the burrow, and a female tuatara is emerging from it. A male tuatara stands at the base of the mound and an adult mutton bird is perched on the top with three small lizards. Photographed by the Burton Brothers in 1890.

This diorama was exhibited at the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, Dunedin, 1889-1890. It was described in the official record of the exhibition (p 142) by Professor T Jeffery Parker of Otago University. The three small lizards represent two species of geckos found on Karewa Island. The scientific names given for them in the official record are Hinulia zealandica and Naultinus punctatus. (info from Dr Alison Cree of Otago University 2006).
