Description: Minister of Finance Robert Muldoon taking part in a tug-of-war at the annual sports day at Hatfield's Beach, Auckland. The prize, a crate of beer, may be seen in the foreground. Photograph taken 27 December 1971 by an Auckland Star staff photographer. Original caption reads: "The Minister of Finance, Mr Muldoon, almost over-taxed himself yesterday. The occasion was the annual sports day on Hatfield's Beach, Auckland and Mr Muldoon made a capital captain of one of the pickup tug-of-war teams. An expert at taking the strain, he displayed an economy of movement and a fund of power at the umpire's call for action. But he could not stabilise his team - and the opposition hauled them across the centre line. The line was marked by a crate of beer which went to the winning squad, and these liquid assets soon became fixed. Naturally Mr Muldoon - showing signs of inflation - shared in the spoils." (Evening Post 28 December 1971) Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s). Physical Description: Gelatin silver print 25.4 x 20.3 cm
