Description

A fenced lawn and garden in the foreground, with two young men, one reclining, one seated. Sir James Hector's house with a second storey and several elaborate chimneys is beyond the fence. The square tower of Government House is in the background, centre left, flag flying. Young pinus radiata and Norfolk pines are in Hector's garden. A large flowering flax plant in on the lawn in front. The foreground garden may be part of Mantell's house

Identified from photograph held by National Museum. Accompanying inscription (in the hand of J C Andersen?) reads: "Plate 209 [or 204]. Painting no doubt by Mantell". Mantell's house was adjacent to Hector's. Dated from internal evidence.

Dating: likely to post-date 1875, when Hector had his house enlarged with additional chimneys built. He moved from this house in 1882, to a larger home on the Western Hills, above Hutt Valley
