William Edward and his wife, Mary Hay (nee Tindall) emigrated to Christchurch on the `Mermaid' in 1864. After eighteen months without steady work they moved to Hokitika where William tried his luck at the gold-diggings before taking up a permanent position with the `West Coast Times'. Late in 1871, the family moved to Melbourne but less than a year later they were back in New Zealand living in Dunedin, where William set up in business as a cabinet maker. In 1877, William's mother, Mary and eldest son, Benjamin, a dentist, came out to New Zealand. Shortly afterwards, William shifted to Auckland where he worked on the staff of the `Evening Post'.
