Part of a Latin bible, from Genesis to Jeremiah, with the prologues ascribed to St Jerome. Glosses have been added in the margins of many pages. Canon Tables inserted at the beginning (ff.1-7v) (see Manion).
Quantity: 1 volume(s).
Physical Description: Vellum, 273 leaves, bound; 197 x 133mm. Double column, 53 lines, ruled in plummet, written space 135 x 80 mm, written in dark-brown ink in a small skilful gothic bookhand, headings in red, capitals touched in red. Many pages extensively glossed in a small contemporary hand.
Finding Aids: Manion, M.M. Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts in New Zealand collections, no. 143..
Provenance: Executed in Northern France in the last quarter of the 13th century. The added prologue (ff.7v-8v) is 17th century, presumably French, though the book was in England soon after. There are signatures of Basil Beridge at Pembroke College, Cambridge, 1701 (f.1), and at Trinity College, 14 June 1703 (f.2); he later became a parish priest in Lincolnshire and died in 1739 (Venn, 'Alumni Cantabrigienses, I, i, p.139). There is a signature on the lower inner corner of f.250v, 'leon[ar]d Albin'. There is a circular label towards the top of the spine in yellow and green marbled paper printed with a serifed '19'. The manuscript belonged to Michael Tomkinson (1841-1921), and was lot 110 in his sale at Sotheby's, 2 July 1922. Purchased by Sir John Ilott.

- 1 volume(s), Illuminated manuscripts, Parchment, Vellum, 273 leaves, bound; 197 x 133mm., Double column, 53 lines, ruled in plummet, written space 135 x 80 mm, written in dark-brown ink in a small skilful gothic bookhand, headings in red, capitals touched in red. Many pages extensively glossed in a small contemporary hand., Binding: Late 19th- or early 20th-century full dark-green polished goatskin, gilt edges; in green case., Decoration: Running titles in alternately red and blue letters with some penwork flourishing; 1-line initials in red or blue with single line contrasting penwork; 2-line initials alternating in red and blue with contrasting penwork. Twenty-seven decorated initials (6- to 28-line, mostly 9- to 10-line) introduce books and prologues. They are in pink, orange or blue on contrasting grounds with infills of foliate and grotesque interlace in blue, pink, orange and green. Outlines are in black and the decoration is heightened by thick white tracery and patternings. From some of the initials partial borders of the same design extend into the margins. Similar initials probably introduced the following books which now begin abruptly: Genesis (f.10), Exodus (f.26), Numbers (f.49), Deuteronomy (f.60), Joshua (f.80), Ruth (f.88), I Kings (f.99), III Kings (f.111), IV Kings (f.123), Psalm 68 (before f.201), Ecclesiastes (f.221), Song of Songs (f.222), Wisdom (f.223), Ecclesiasticus (f.228), Isiah (f.242), Jeremiah (f.260). The Canon Tables which also begin abruptly (f.1v) and the general prologue of St Jerome which now is introduced by a 17th-century hand (f.7v) were probably also decorated with initials.
