Description

A Punch and Judy show, with Premier John Hall to the left, as the proprietor and as a one-man band, with a drum and pan pipes. He is standing in front of a gaslight, announcing the show to the audience, which comprises a boy, a man wearing a hat inscribed 'Enlightened electors of New Zealand' and, on the right, a minstrel violinist, touching one finger knowingly to the side of his nose, and either picking the pocket of the man next to him or pushing into his pocket a paper marked 'Majority'. The Punch and Judy theatre is surmounted by the heraldic device for the British Crown (the lion and unicorn flanking a shield) while Punch is played by John Bryce, Minister for Native Affairs, and 'Judy' is a tattooed Maori man, unable to react to Bryce's punches.
