Description

Photograph of a Maori group at a picnic in Pigeon Bush, Wairarapa, in 1896. There are a number of entertainers visible in the photograph including a man wearing a dress and holding up a large eel, and another man with an accordian. Also present are Richard Seddon (far left, wearing a Maori feather cloak), Tamahau Mahupuku (right of Seddon, also wearing a cloak), and James Carroll (right of Tamahau Mahupuku, behind girl with hat). The photographer was possibly Albert Edward Winzenberg.

This picnic was held to celebrate the settlement of the question regarding the ownership and usage of Lake Wairarapa.
