Description

Unidentified men with tobacco pipes, washing dishes and peeling potatoes, outside the Fahy whare at Maranui (now known as Lyall Bay), circa 1910. Photograph taken by Sydney Charles Smith.

"This is likely to have been a house for weekend bachelor holidays where sporting activities (note the gun) would usually take precedence over domestic chores. A net covered food safe is attached to the wall on the left. The versatile kerosene tin plays one of its many roles in early New Zealand households." (Information from caption used in "Darling, I'm home!" display).

Exhibited in 'Darling, I'm Home!' exhibition at the National Library of New Zealand, 1 June - 5 July 1999.
