A view on board the ship Kaikoura, with the artist shaking hands with his sailor cousin (T. G. B. or Thomas G Bailey), watched by a third sailor. Two further officers stand on the deck in the middle distance. The ship's bridge is visible in the background and ships at Wellington's wharves can be seen in the distance.
The next day, the Kaikoura departed for Panama. The officer watching Hawkins and Bailey shaking hands may be Frederick Bracegirdle, 4th officer, who sailed with Bailey for some years. Another of the officers present may be the artist Bowen Watson Nazer, who was also on board the Kaikoura when she docked in Wellington in February 1867
