- Description
Five men on the near bank of the River Bealey with a ladder propped against a telegraph pole. They are sending a parcel of food across the river via the telegraph wires to M. P. Ihaiah Tainui on the other side. Also on the other side are a woman, presumably Mrs Tainui, with a babe-in-arms and a child. In the distance to the right is a stranded coach. Ihaiah Tainui was Member of the House of Representatives for Southen Maori, 1879-1880.
The artist has mis-spelled Ihaiah Tainui's first name. It also seems likely that he has mistakenly interpolated an "and" in between the words "wife" and "Maria" so that the title should read "his wife Maria", not "his wife and Maria".
Attributed to George Turner (1833-1911) at the time of purchase. In a very similar style to other drawings by Turner and the handwriting below the work is also similar to inscriptions on other work by Turner.
