Maxwell was working as a bank clerk in Hawera when he enlisted in the army in Oct 1939. He saw service with 19 Battalion in North Africa, Greece and Crete and was captured during action in the Western Desert in Jul 1942. He was imprisoned at Camp PG 85 Tuturana, Italy. After the defeat of Italy he returned to New Zealand and was discharged from the army in in Oct 1944.
