Description

Reproduction of a watercolour by Louis-Auguste de Sainson. A view from a hill to the south of Paihia, looking north along the beach line, with the houses and gardens of the Church Missionary Society station, home of the Rev. Henry Williams and his family. Two European men and a small boy are standing on the hill in the foreground beside a tree. The artist visited the site in March 1827.

A pencil drawing by Sainson of this view, dated 12 March 1827, is in the Archives Nationales, Paris, (Marine JJ 102 A f 14); and the original watercolour is in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. There are also later engraved versions of the same view, one in Dumont d'Urville's 'Voyage pittoresque autour du monde', Paris, 1835, Vol 2, p. 356 and one in Domeny de Rienzi's 'Oceanie' Vol 2, Paris 1836, plate 174. Each of these later versions shows signficant changes in the detail.
