Description

The cartoon shows a diver (Economy) on the bottom of the sea. He has been trapped by an octopus (Manufacturing output), a shark (Unemployment), a crab (VAT), a clam (Retail sales), and an anchor (Interest rates). On the surface, in a recovery boat, John Major is drinking a glass of champagne while a colleague expresses concearn at the length of time the diver has been down. Refers to Major's increasing popularity despite the economy sinking into deeper recession.
