Description

Upper view: Two-storied wooden house surrounded with plaited fibre fences. A man is cutting logs with an axe in the left foreground, while a male missionary reads, probably from the Bible to a Tongan man, woman and child on the right. There is another Tongan seated on the ground near the house and another carrying a load towards the house's front door.

Lower view: A river in the foreground with a canoe. A Tongan woman is stepping into the water behind the canoe. Beyond her are trees and a plaited fibre fence with a large two-storied European-style house in the background.

Plate 160 from an unknown Swedish publication, probably a missionary journal. The upper image is redrawn from the engraving by Sainson, in Vol 1, opp. p.59, Plate 7, the lower from Vol 2, opposite p.70, plate 9 in Voyage pittoresque autour du monde by J. S. C. Dumont d'Urville (Paris, 1834-5). The Swedish language version of Voyage Pittoresque ... (held by the Library at 910.4 /P/DUM) is duodecimo size and has no illustrations. It was published between 1836 and 1840.
