- Description
A group of four Maori girls, probably in their teens. Two are standing in the centre flanked by trees, with the young woman on the right holding a long poi, the woman on the left with her arm around the shoulder of the other. At their feet is seated another young woman on the right, swinging a pair of long poi, watched by the fourth young woman who is reclining at the left. Both women on the left are wearing the korowai, a black-fringed tag cloak of flax. The standing woman is wearing a blanket as a skirt while the esseated woman is wearing a paki skirt of strips of flax.
There is a related ink and watercolour drawing held in the Hocken Library with inscription in the hand of the artist 'Maori game of poi by J. J. Merrett'l. There do not appear to be significant differences between the two drawings
