Description

Weather balloon about to be released from the Meteorological Enclosure on the Crown (now Observatory) Reserve, Botanic Garden, Kelburn, Wellington. On the left are the range finder and theodolite used in the observation of the balloon. The man on the left is Dr M A F Barnett (later a director of the Meteorological Service).

The building on the rise is the Wellington Philisophical Society's (now the King) Observatory which was built in 1917.
