Description

Providence petrel or brown-headed petrel (Pterodroma solandri) of Norfolk Island. Specimen depicted in profile standing on a rock surrounded by small plants.

When the HMS 'Sirius' was wrecked on Norfolk Island the shipwrecked passengers and later settlers, marines, and convicts slaughtered thousands of birds for food. The petrel became extinct on Norfolk Island, but in the twentieth century it has been identified to be the same as the extant species found on Lord Howe Island.
