Description

Album of photographs, mostly relating to New Zealanders in the South African War, but also including many which show the D Battery, 1st New Zealand Mounted Rifles at various military camps in the Wellington region. Many show groups of soldiers, with surnames noted. One view shows the Opening of Parliament in 1898, with a parade of D Battery; and a few show the opening of the Star Boating Club in Wellington. Some images taken by unidentified photographers, some probably taken by Thomas Watson Brown. The earliest image was taken in 1878, and shows a home in Masterton; another image shows a work picnic with a group in a tug-of-war at Day's Bay, in 1912; a group portrait of staff in the Mines Department taken in Wellington, 1907; and a group portrait of the 10th anniversary reunion of the 1st New Zealand Contingent, held in Wellington, 21.10.1909, taken by Zak Studios, No. 7275.
