Description

Physical Description: Vellum, 63 leaves, bound; 370 x 255 mm. Double column, 36-37 lines, ruled in plummet with the text beginning above the top ruled line, written space 260-268 x 173 mm, written in dark-brown ink in a large early gothic hand written by two scribes (changing on f.50v), authorities in red in the margins; the first letters of each line are set just out into the margins; where the third letter of a word progresses in the alphabetical sequence, there is a space for a one-line initial left blank; some small diagrams in the text (e.g. ff.7v-8).

Provenance: Executed in Northern France (possibly Burgundy) in the last quarter of the 12th century. May be Cistercian in origin, possibly the Cistercian abbey of Pontigny in Burgundy (see Manion). Manuscript sold at Hodgson's 7 March 1952, lot 484, to Maggs, and was no.152 in their catalogue (1953).

Two are in divided red and blue with pen and brushwork infills of stylized flowers in both colours (ff.1 and 23v) and two are in simple divided red (ff.2v and 62v).
