- Description
A closeup view of the axle design and valve motion of a "We" class steam locomotive. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber, ca 1902.
One of two locomotives originally built as B class (4-8-0 type) goods engines by Sharp, Stewart Co., Glasgow, which were converted in 1902 to 4-6-4 tank locomotive, for use on the Rimutaka Incline. Probably "B" 178 which was renumbered "We" 377 in 1902. The trailing coupled wheels were removed, and the frames extended to accommodate a trailing bogie. Cab altered, tanks added, a bunker constructed from the tender, and a centre rail brake added for the Fell system. See "Register of New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, 1863-1971" by W G Lloyd, and "Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives" by A N Palmer & W W Stewart.
