Contains 71 watercolours including views of Hokitika goldfields, Akaroa, Pigeon Bay, Sumner, Robinson's Bay; Waiau, Bealey and Otira Rivers, Lakes Forsyth, Pearson, Sheppard.
Contains a photograph inside back cover, showing a Maori wedding at Akaroa.
Inscriptions: Album page - centre - (Inside front cover): T Octavius Hurt (printed) / (handwritten in ink): In NZ from 1861-1871.; Works entitled on separate labels beneath them.
Hurt was partner in a farm in the Selwyn area, but this partnership dissolved in 1862. He appears in provincial council lists up to 1872.

Description: Shows high cliffs taking up the height of the image, with two rowboats visible at the bottom. The "Crest" was wrecked between Akaroa North head and Flea Bay, on 27 October 1868, and this seems the most likely ketch to be the subject here. Description: Shows two men in the centre foreground, one sitting against a fallen tree trunk, one crouched with hand to face. Behind them, at right a man raises an axe to cut a tree trunk, a fuel-gatherer carries a bundle of greenery and wood, and a man accompanies two pack-donkeys at left. Two men attend to a cooking-fire. In the background is a row of tents, shacks, a washing-line and a general store. In the right distance, masts of two sailing ships are visible in the port. Description: Shows single-storey homestead with verandah in left foreground, with lake and mountains in background. In right foreground, a man with arm raised directs his dogs to round up stock (possibly cattle rather than sheep, but indistinct). There is some fencing across the field between dwelling and stock. Stitched to leaf tipped into sketchbook. E-501-f-059 on verso. Henry Taylor was drowned in the Teremakau River in 1867. This picture may therefore predate 1867.
