Shows Dr William Edward Collins aged 60 years approx
William Edward Collins was born Darjeeling. Educated Cheltenham College, England and London University. Qualified at St Georges Hospital, London, (FRCS 1876, MB 1877). Represented England in rugby against Scotland and Ireland for several years. Came to New Zealand and settled in Wellington. Was for 30 years Honory surgeon to Wellington hospital. Called to Legislative Council 1914, and was a member until his death (1934). During World War I (1914-1918) served in a hospital ship and afterwards was Chairman of the New Zealand Red Cross Society which he represented at Genva and the Hague. To him is due the Junior Red Cross Movement. He was on the senate of the University of New Zealand 1904-1930)
