Fragments of the unpublished Maori Grammar and vocabulary of Thomas Kendall, 1827

Contains photocopy of signatures C-F of the 1827 Grammar inscribed to the Rev, Richard Hill by Kendall with accompanying copy of a clipping on the provenance of the fragment, copy of catalogue record from Auckland Institute and Museum and related notes. The document itself was missing in the 1960s, recovered in 1996 and then mislaid. Also a photocopy from the Hocken Library of its own fragment (preliminary pages i-iv, 5-8) signed by Kendall from Hocken MS 72/3, with photocopies extracts from Sydney Herald, 1831, which refer to the intended publication.

Provenance: Hill/Taylor copy purchased 1952 for Auckland Museum through the Vaile Fund, formerly in Reserve PL 6465 K 3, transferred to Oceanic Languages coll, March 1995, later mislaid. Copy was made for Phil Parkinson by Jeny Curnow 1995. On the loss of the original a copy was made from the present photocopy for the Museum.
