View looking down lower Molesworth Street (then Charlotte Street) or possibly Hill Street towards Wellington Harbour, with Government House and its garden to the right, its flagpole in the centre. The houses along Lambton Quay can be seen along the beach-line in the distance and Plimmer's Ark marks the end of Lambton Quay. Several other buildings above Te Aro are also visible. Two standing and one seated Maori are at the side of the road in the foreground and part of a building can be seen in the left foreground
Government House was originally the house of William Wakefield
There is an almost identical view to this in the British Library, a watercolour by W. A. McCleverty, dated 1851, titled [Government House, Wellington]
